Ballpoint pens are used everywhere—schools, offices, banks, and homes. But few people know what goes into making one.
Behind every simple pen lies a precise, multi-step manufacturing process. At Aihao, we’ve been refining this process for over 30 years. In this article, we’ll walk you through how a ballpoint pen is made—from raw materials to finished product.

2. Key Components of a Ballpoint Pen
A typical ballpoint pen consists of these main parts:
Take our model AH190 for example :

- Plunger -Button part. The component you press to extend or retract the refill.
- Plunger Spring -Used to push the plunger back up when you release the button.
- Upper Ratchet -The rotating part that engages with the lower ratchet.
- Lower Ratchet -Works with the upper ratchet to lock the refill in either writing or retracted position.
- Clip-Allows the pen to be attached to pockets, notebooks, or folders.
- Barrel -The outer body of the pen.
- Grip -The section where the user holds the pen.
- Refill -The core writing component. It contains the ink and the ballpoint tip, and determines the writing smoothness and ink flow. This is the most critical part of the pen.
- Spring -Refill spring. Provides the force to push the refill back into the barrel when the mechanism is retracted.
- Cone-The front tapered section of the pen that guides the refill tip out through the opening.
3. Step-by-Step Manufacturing Process
- Step 1: Raw Materials
We start with:
Plastic resins – ABS, POM,TPE,PMMA ,PC etc are commonly used for production .
Color Pigments are added into resins to achieve the desired colors.

- Step 2: Injection Molding
Plastic parts are made using injection molding:
Colored Resin are melted at high temperature.
Molten plastic is injected into custom molds.
The plastic cools and solidifies.
Parts are ejected.

This automated process produces thousands of parts per hour.
- Step 3: Refill Assembly
The refill is the core part of the pen:
This is divided into 2 parts :Tip making &Refill assembly
The ballpoint tip is manufactured by cutting stainlesssteel wire, drilling holes, machining into a cone, inserting the steel ball, and crimping to lock the ball in place to get the finished tip.
Aihao made this process by swiss imported MIKRON tip-making machines.

The refill assembly consists of three main components: the PP refill tube, the ink, and the pre-assembled tip.
The assembly process begins with fitting the blank PP refill tube to the tip. The ink is then filled into the tube, and the rear end is sealed with lithium-based grease. After that, the refills are processed through a centrifuge to remove air bubbles, followed by inspection and final wax sealing.

- Step 4:Printing
Aihao offered comprehensive In-House printing solutions to meet client demand. Such as Heat transfer film, hot stamping ,pad printing ,full color printing ,UV silk screen printing ,laser engraving etc.

Step 5: Assembly
We don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach to assembly. Instead, we design our production lines based on how complex the product is and what the customer needs. Once all the parts are ready, we choose the right assembly method—fully automated, semi-automated, or manual—to get the job done efficiently and with consistent quality.

- Step 6: Quality Control
Each pen undergoes final mass production order inspection.
We follow international standards like GB/T 26714-2019 and GB/T 37853-2019.
Conclusion
Making a ballpoint pen may look simple, but it requires precision, expertise, and control at every stage.
